Event honoring Nicky a success

By Bob Shryock

A video, edited and produced by Jason Brandemarti, told you all you need to know about Jason's brother, Nicky Brandemarti.
Nicky's smile, his determination, his sense of humor, his love for his family and friends, his powerful zest for life.
Bringing tears and laughs, the video was a highlight of a golf tournament awards banquet that may be unrivaled for attendance in Gloucester County history. Nearly 400 turned out at Nicolosi Catering for the first Nicky Brandemarti Memorial Golf Classic dinner.
Attracting an extraordinary 218 golfers at RiverWinds Golf Club to provide scholarships for West Deptford High School student-athletes (Damon McWhite and Jackie Shaw in 2002, Kyle Mancuso and Sonie Quick in 2003), the tournament grossed a staggering $85,000 according to organizers.
After expenses for golf and dinner, it is expected to net about half that figure, already marking it one of the most successful fund-raisers in county charity golfing history.
Nicky, a West Deptford High School graduate and top student- athlete, was lost in the World Trade Center terrorist attacks, just weeks after he'd begun working at Keefe, Bruyette & Woods, armed with his degree from Fordham
University. The tournament and dinner are another indication he and the others who perished on 9-11 won't be forgotten.
Nicky starred in football at West Deptford. He established a single game school rushing record of 337 yards against Gateway and a single season mark of 1,204 yards until the aforementioned Damon McWhite broke it. Then, at Fordham, Nicky was a stellar player who captured the school's Bill Tierney Spirit Award.
Bill Henningson represented Keefe, Bruyette & Woods at the tournament dinner and received a standing ovation prior to his brief remarks. His firm was top (platinum) sponsor of the tournament. The event had an amazing 180 sponsors, unmatched support in local tourney annals.
Gold sponsors were The Bank, Dr. John Millili, Giumarello Salon & Day Spa, David's Bridal, National Paintball Supply Inc., Vallee & Bowe Cadillac, Belltone Electronics, and an anonymous donor, and  (Electric Mobility).
Festivities included a heartwarming presentation by a close family friend, Greg Rendelman, and remarks and acknowledgement by Dan Baker, a West Deptford resident who is the public address voice of the Eagles and Phillies.
Besides Jason, all immediate family members took part in the program -Nicky's parents, Nancy and Nick Sr., and Nicky's sister
Nicole.
There were plenty of tears but just as many laughs, just what Nicky would have preferred.
Bill VanKat performed yeoman duties running the golf tournament on a day that started in dense fog. Scramble winners included a team led by reigning Gloucester County Amateur champion Scott Elwell, which captured gross honors, and a net team that included, appropriately, Nick
Brandemarti Sr.
 Elwell's team shot an
un-worldly -17 under-par 55 at difficult RiverWinds, eagling all four par-5s.
But the day wasn't about golf winners. The day was about remembering a young man whose life was ahead of him while remembering others who lost their lives as well. It was sobering and uplifting at the same time.
